Cheilanthes lanosa, also known as the Hairy Lip Fern or Woolly Lip Fern, is a unique, compact fern with a striking appearance. Its finely divided fronds are covered in a soft, grey-green fuzz that feels almost velvety to the touch.
Origin
Cheilanthes lanosa is native to North America, where it naturally grows in rocky, dry areas. Despite its delicate appearance, it is a hardy survivor that tolerates drought well—setting it apart from many other fern species.
Location
This fern prefers a spot in light to partial shade. Full sun is only tolerated if the soil remains moist and the plant is somewhat sheltered, for example between rocks or near a wall.
Care
- Water: Water moderately. Allow the soil to dry slightly between waterings, especially during winter.
- Soil: Well-draining soil is essential. You can mix in some gravel or coarse sand when planting.
- Hardiness: Very hardy (down to approx. -20°C / -4°F) as long as the soil isn’t too wet in winter.
- Pruning: No pruning necessary, but you can remove dead fronds in early spring.
- Feeding: Apply some compost or organic fertilizer in spring.
Special Features
The fuzzy texture of the fronds acts as a natural protection against moisture loss, making this fern an excellent choice for drier gardens. A perfect addition for rock gardens or naturalistic planting schemes with character.
